From what I found at Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, it is not necessary to resubmit your website unless you have a new page to be indexed or if you move your website to a new host. Because of this, I believe that broadening of our Internet presence on the web is very important. That is were a Facebook page comes in, also LinkedIn, blog posts, Twitter, Cafepress, etc., to give more places for the major search engines the chance to discover our website. Well...there is a new design (Buckeye Butterflies 'n' Indian Painbrush) ready to print that we have showcased in a new area called "HOT off the press!!!" When Momma and I started working on our new business back in 2003, we found out the literal meaning for this phrase! As the "new" commercial printer was busy printing our paperdoll creations I happened to pick up the stack of pages off the printer and they were still HOT! Naturally, I shared this experience with Momma and the rest of the family. So, we feel that our showcase area for new designs should be titled "HOT off the press!!!"

To Twitter or Not To Twitter...

To Twitter or Not To Twitter...that is the question! RainToday.com, the Premier Site for Marketing & Sales for Professional Services, sent out an interesting email "Why You Need to Use Twitter to Grow Your Business". They are saying that the big companies are using Twitter to "tighten their ad spending with social media clearly becoming the next marketing frontier".

Once the website renovation is complete, I feel that this might be a good move for PJ's. It will be interesting to see if this helps generate traffic to our gift shoppe.

It has been extremely hard to find time to work on the website during this past year. Working 10 hour days plus half a day of Saturday does not leave much time to put in the time necessary to bring the quality website that represents Phyllis and Janey's endeavors over the past 6 years. However, it is a top priority to complete the renovation and website optimizations.

New Navigation Bar for www.pjscorner.net...

I created this new navigation bar for the website. I am starting to experience some unstableness in FrontPage 2003. Some of the web components are not working, such as the link bar. Yesterday I was unable to save the changes to our homepage. I could always upload my changes through an FTP service, however after reading that I could have different problems with this line of action, I called Register.com. After talking with the representatives at Register.com, and finding out that FrontPage 2003 is notorious for becoming unstable on websites with more than 80 pages, they uninstalled and reinstalled my FrontPage extensions on their server and was unable to fix the problem. However, Second Level fixed the problem before midnight and I was able to continue with my original plans to downsize the website.

We do not have a walk-in store, so our home office has been turned into a workshoppe! With paper dolls and greeting cards pasted on the walls, and cut out paper dolls filling the shelves, Mom and I enjoy the uh, quote unquote, solitude of our workshoppe! Because our designs are created with family in mind, using the artwork of our in-house artist: Phyllis Mae Richardson Fisher, you will find flowers, butterflies, animals and nature as a recurring theme. Our gift shoppe is the home of "Twiglet" the Little Christmas Tree, a children's book about discoveries, miracles, and friendships, and "Neddy, the Little Teddy", the first animal paper doll created in PJ's Paper Doll Factory!

If our society wasn't based on money, then we could be a non-profit organization giving our products away. That would be fun though, just being able to create gift boxes, bags 'n' baskets to take to the children's wards! I can see sad little eyes turning bright as a little girl finds a paper doll to cut out or a little boy glowing from the praise he received for his coloring book masterpiece in crayon!

That would be reward or "money" enough for me...in the meantime, we do make several of our coloring book pages available for FREE download. With the changes scheduled for our website, we will be adding a FREE paper doll and featuring our Kid's Coloring Book page in a more prominent place on our website.

New Design ~ Winter Homestead 'n' Elk...

Our latest Christmas design, "Winter Homestead 'n' Elk" was taken from a painting that my mother painted back in 2000. From memory she drew a red 'n' white homestead replete with a red 'n' white barn and an elk looking on from afar. This scene was painted on a cross section of a tree trunk so the radiating lines that you see in the picture are part of the trunk.

Today I reactivated the shopping cart for the PJ's Corner Gift Shoppe. I will be working on the revamping of each of the pages, one page at a time. The "Twiglet the Little Christmas Tree" page was redesigned and added to the Product By Design Column.

I am adding a "price tag" and "add to cart" to each of the products and linking the products to their individual pages in the store front to these images.

This should make the order process much easier to navigate. A "view cart" image 'n' link has been placed in the top left hand corner and in the center below the product listed on the page as well.

It wasn't that easy...

In the last post I was all excited that the new modem had arrived and thought that all I needed to do was unhook the cables, out with the old in with the new, and I would be in business again! Not so...

After opening the box, I found that the modem had been packed well, so unless something had been jarred loose, it would be okay. I was all set to follow the directions to install the new modem when I realized that I did not have the 28 digit registration number needed to complete registration. I called our satellite company, obtained the numbers and successfully installed the new modem.

That is were the fun began. The original problem was still there. I could not upload images or work on our website because the connection kept breaking. I called the satellite company again and after exhausting their resources, was sent up to 3rd Level support.

After working on several different scenarios to try to fix the problem, the technician decided that it was a problem with our satellite equipment outside. Of course our warranty was up and the cost to get an installer to come out and check the satellite dish and receiver/transmit unit would be on us.

I need to back up a little here and tell you what happened while I was on the phone. While talking with a Level 2 technician, I heard a horrible noise under the workshoppe trailer and then one of our dogs squealing across the property in pain. Our storeroom cat, Jewel, had scratched Dunny. In the process of getting away from her, Dunny had got tangled in the phone line and ripped it away from the box. This is at 2:30 in the morning.

I fortunately had a cell phone and lots of minutes built up to call tech support back. The same technician I had been disconnected from answered and we continued as if he had just put me on hold. He didn't ask what had happened and I didn't tell! He worked for a little longer finding that our modem wasn't passing a couple of tests, so that is when he transferred me to 3rd Level.

Time to get some rest and I would tackle this new problem with the phone line in the morning...

...in the morning I found that my modem was working beautifully and it has all day. When the installer calls to set up the appointment I will have the joy of canceling that appointment. The phone company will have to come out and fix the phone line.

The New Satellite Modem is HERE!!!

The new satellite modem arrived this afternoon! The box is crushed a little, I hope that it is not damaged. After I install it, which is a matter of a couple of cables, the power source and the connection to the computer tower, the real work begins...

Closed for Maintenance...

PJ's shopping cart is closed for maintenance. Until I can get the revamping done on the site and shopping cart, mom and I made the decision to close the shopping cart. With the problems with the satellite modem and changes taking place, we do not want to portrait a non-professional image.

As I have stated in previous posts, the reason for this revamping is to make www.pjscorner.net more navigable to our prospective customers as well as for our returning customers. We want your visit to PJ's Corner Gift Shoppe to be a pleasant experience. I will be working overtime to get the shopping cart open again.

Satellite Down...

Since Monday I have had major problems with our satellite modem (terminal). Every time I wanted to upload a picture, work on the website, write comments on the blogs I read, or the weather changed the modem would go from having five blue lights (working condition) to three blue lights (not working).

I called our satellite company and it was determined that we needed a new terminal. It will take 3 to 5 working days for it to get here. Not in the middle of revamping the website! And when we need to advertise everywhere that we are hosting a blog carnival on our "Twiglet" blog.

I have still tried to get things done, answer emails, send invitations out for the blog carnival, work on the BLOG VILLAGE Equine Webring, scan in the new International Friends paper dolls and their traditional outfits and scan 3 more outfits for PJ's Pollyanna (this is the paper doll that went to the 2006 Paper Doll Convention).

Not to waste any time, Mom and I took this opportunity to dust the workshoppe and even bought new curtains. I found some natural macrame tier coordinates. Our workshoppe is a converted 1960 Mobile Home. I don't know when the wood paneling was put up, however we added brown tweed carpeting to match. My father built both of our desks, two work tables, a wall unit with 90 cubby holes and two bookshelves.

It is interesting to note that after I called our satellite company to see if I could get a tracking number, the modem has been working non-stop. It is 12:07 AM on Friday morning and I called them around 7:30pm, just about 5 1/2 hours ago. Hmm...

Tonight I figured out how to link the individual item back to the website! I added the html coding for adding a hyperlink in a blog comment into the description of the item in ProStores and it worked! I will add links as I complete the pages in this list of paper doll pages that I need to revamp:

Last night or should I say early this morning before I went to sleep for the night, I completed the "Product by Occasions" link in the footer. I am working toward the goal of optimizing our website. The goal is quite formidable, however I have found documenting my progress on this blog has focused my sights on the finished product.

In a Google search to find "blog message boards", I ran across a business blog with a post about this very subject. Wayne Hurlbert of Blog Business World wrote a very informative and interesting post about Blog message boards: A blog traffic builder.

In the post he lists, with links, several message boards. This will be an important step in PJ's SEO (search engine optimization) campaign.

Website Update Progress...

Well, it looks like we will be keeping ProStores as our store front. I have been working on the website for the past couple of days and because of phone calls and regular office work, I have not gotten as far along as I would like.

I've completed the following pages:

With each page on the site, I linked each item to its page in the store, created a nameplate (like the one in this post) and connected the pages to the new shared border footer. I am in the middle of working on PJ's Paper Doll page. After creating a table of contents on this page, I found out that we have 63 paper dolls so far! But that is not counting all of the paper dolls in the "Friends of the World" and "Twins of the World" sets. I'll count those tomorrow!

All of the links to the pages in the site are set up in three categories.

In the "CLASSNOTES" section of the Summer 2005 issue of "Oregon Tech", there is a small article about my mother, Phyllis, and our company PJ's Corner. Published three times a year, this publication is for alumni and friends of Oregon Institute of Technology. The college was called Oregon Technical Institute when mom was attending. The college mascot is an owl and alumni are considered "Hooters". Here is the article:

New Header added to PJ's Diary...

This collage of art sparks and paper dolls, represents some of the designs created in PJ's Corner Gift Shoppe. The two little kids little kids in the middle are little paper dolls named Donnie and Gracie. The little bear with the red heart is Neddy the Little Teddy, is one of PJ's Little Animal Paper Doll.

The cloud 'n' birds, 707 Boeing airplane and merchant ship are just a few of the art sparks that make up our "Travel Memories 'n' Fun" design. The corner cabinet behind is an animated picture on our About PJ's page and the cactus is apart of our "Cactus in The Desert" design. The rest of the art sparks are scattered through PJ's Corner Gift Shoppe and PJ's Butterfly flits among the sunflowers on our logo.

Apple Blossoms 'n' Butterflies...

This springy design captures the Yellow Swallowtail butterfly as it flits from Apple Blossom to Apple Blossom! Choose from "Get Well", "Just Because", "Thank You", "Think of You", "You Are Welcome" and "Gracias" Note Cards and add the matching gift card or scrapbook stickers.

Each note card is 4.25" x 5.5" in size with part of the design spilling over into the inside. A matching envelope and seal are include.

PJ's partners with PayPal Merchant Services..

Today we decided to go with PayPal for our merchant needs. Besides being cheaper by $150.00, adding the "add to cart" buttons are very simple and yet very professional looking. I will be revamping one page at a time, adding clearer images and the new "add to cart" and "view cart" buttons and deleting those items from the old storefront.

This will accommodate the necessity for the website and storefront to be integrated and interwoven for a smoother, more enjoyable visit in PJ's Corner Gift Shoppe. Once the new buttons are added to all 599 products, the customer will not feel like they ever left the site.

I will use the weekend to implement this change while giving "voice" to this conversion on this blog. I started with our "Apple Blossom 'n' Butterflies" page. One page down...73 to go!!! Plus I will be adding the pages for the CafePress items.

New Look for PJ's Blogs...

It's time for a new look!

PJ's Paper Doll Cut Outs, Twiglet the Little Christmas Tree, Notes That Touch The Heart and this blog receive new headers, banners, vignettes and or links.

The old look over at PJ's Paper Doll Cut Outs didn't use an image banner so the new look included the following header using one of our PJ's Universal Paper Dolls and some of her fall clothes.

For the sidebar, I created a vignette
using our fall leaves. A swag and base formed
the frame around each section.

And created new 468x60 and 234x30 banners:

Twiglet's Book Blog didn't have a header either, so the new look incorporates images from the book and the paper doll twins. Fall is a busy time of year for Rueben 'n' Rachel.

I did not create vignettes for this blog, yet. And the old banner is still serviceable...

I would like to use this header, but can't seem to upload it. It could have something to do with the satellite problems that we have been experiencing for the past week.

On my personal blog, Notes That Touch The Heart, I created a design that brought together my favorite color of purple, music and writing.

And on this blog, the heading is new. I need to create vignettes for all the blogs, but I will not try to add those until after the holidays! We do not have very many days left until Christmas and I need to continue with the revamping of our website...

Adding New Fonts...

I ran into the problem of not having the same fonts available on both my desktop and laptop. For an order for the first five PJ's International Friends Paper Doll booklets, I wanted to use Black Chancery font that was available on my laptop only. That is until I found out how to download and install free True Type font on my desktop! There are several font vendors out there that list Font Designers and their foundries with links to their freeware. However, it was over at dafont.com that I found the directions to install the font into my Windows Font Folder. Thank you for making memories in PJ's Corner...

I created favicons for all blogs and websites. A BLOG VILLAGE member Tips for New Bloggers is a wealth of information! After downloading "Imagicon", a small program that converts BMP, JPG and PNG files into BMP, JPG, PNG and ICO files, from Download.com
I followed the step by step instructions on BizWhiz's "Adding Favicon Icon to Blogger URL" post.

What is a favicon? It is the tiny icon next to the address in the address bar or next to the tab title of the pages you are currently surfing.
